Hvaldimir has left Hammerfest again, and is currently traveling between places around Seiland.
While it would be challenging and somewhat unnecessary to follow him on a daily basis, we are planning on monitoring his condition for a few days at a time each month. Behavioral observations and fecal samples collected last weekend strongly supported natural feeding. However, it remains unknown whether his daily food intake is enough to sustain his body weight overtime. Fecal samples (see photo) will be shipped to a laboratory for DNA analysis and identification of the prey eaten.
We are hoping to get more answers in the coming weeks/months.
Ensuring Hvaldimir's protection is beyond our power since he is a free-ranging whale but we hope he will stay safe out there!
